Boyle Street Community Services
King Thunderbird Centre Media Event
Media relations “in the round”
Boyle Street Community Services’ community centre, a crucial resource for hundreds of clients affected by homelessness or extreme poverty, urgently needed a new home. Faced with electrical issues, water damage and other serious problems in its aging building, Boyle Street launched an ambitious $28.5 million fundraising campaign to renovate a different building nearby and open a purpose-built, state-of-the-art community centre there. To draw attention to the fundraising campaign, Berlin organized a media event that matched the inclusive, forward-thinking vision for the new centre. In addition to handling media relations before and during the event, our work included creating the event concept, choosing and securing a location, developing the speaking and performance program, and providing a messaging framework and speaking notes. To celebrate Boyle Street’s partnerships with Indigenous communities, we visually anchored the whole media conference around “Iron Foot Place,” a beautiful mosaic at Rogers Place by the renowned Indigenous artist Alex Janvier. When photographers arrived, we showed them the mezzanine above the mosaic that would help them capture stunning overhead shots of the proceedings.
